Our Story
After discovering trail running in June of 2015, Jimmy fell in love with it! With 8 miles being his longest run to-date, he ran across a Facebook post for the Bear 100, which had taken place on 25 September that year; he quickly searched up the 2016 event and saw in bold red font "Must have finished a 50-miler in 16 hours or less to register". That made sense. He'd never heard of the term "ultramarathon", but saw that they came in various distances, to include 100k, 50-miler, and on down to 50k. With 4 monthys of intermittent trail running experience under his belt, he found a local 50k to sign up for before the year was out - Jim Skaggs' Fall Classic Antelope Island 50k! Knowing he'd only run as far as 8 miles prior, he thought he ought to give his local 22-mile, 6,000 ft of vert Stansbury Front Trail a go, to see if he could handle a 50k. Succeeding at that, he signed up for his first ultra, a whopping 5 months into his trail running career - it hurt, but he finished it and hasn't looked back since!
In April of 2016, Jimmy completed the Salt Flats Endurance Runs 50-miler, then upped his game and finished the Tushars 93k in August of 2016. Thoroughly enamored with trail running and trail racing, especially in rugged, high mountain trails and peaks, Jimmy thought there ought to be a trail race somewhere in the Oquirrh Mountains of Tooele County. All that was offered were a couple Independence Day 5k's in Tooele & Grantsville, and some unofficial road half's. "I guess I'll be the guy...", thought Jimmy.
In May of 2017, the first Tooele Trail Racing event was born - the Serengeti Trail Races. Each subsequent year, through 2021, Jimmy, and his lovely wife, Kim, added additional races to the repertoire: Bear Trap Trail Races, White Pine Solstice Runs, Tooele Turkey Trail Trot 'Til You Drop, and Connor's Claims Ultra. Having run all over the Tooele County side of the Oquirrh Mountains, Jimmy is constantly mapping out in his mind course route ideas. Over the years, the courses have evolved from event-to-event, with Serengeti Trail Races, Bear Trap Trail Races, & the Turkey Trail Trot seeing the most change. White Pine Solstice Runs & Connor's Claims Ultra have settled over the previous 4-5 years.
We love seeing runners give it their all on our courses. We try to really deliver on the experience runners will face out on the course: the scenery, the challenge, and we hope - the fun! We love getting to know the runners, seeing repeat offenders, & having wonderful volunteers help us put these events on!
Well, Jimmy went on to sign up for that ultra that piqued his interest back in fall of 2015; he completed the 2017 Bear 100! Since then, he's finished many ultra's, including the 2018 Ute 100; 2019 Zion & Wasatch 100's; 2022 Antelope Island Buffalo Run, Salt Flats Endurance Runs, & Wyoming Range Endurance Run 100's; 2023 Scout Mountain Ultras 100; 2024 Bryce Canyon Ultras & Run Rabbit Run 100's; and the 2025 Utah 115, Goat Rattler, Pony Express Trail Run, & Dreadmill Endurance Challenge 100's.
